Ngugi Buleya, founder of the Ngugi International Foundation, has announced the debut Miss Teen Malawi, a pageant for teen girls with a passion for modelling.
With registration now open, the Miss Teen Malawi programme seeks to create a nurturing platform where teenage participants can foster personal growth and become ambassadors of positivity and inspiration.
Speaking on the development, Buleya, who is also the newly appointed ambassador of Zikomo Africa Awards brand, said she envisions Miss Teen Malawi to be more than a beauty pageant.
“The event aims to empower teen girls as this is one of the most vulnerable age groups that need proper guidance and moulding for Malawi to have strong, successful future female leaders,” she said.
Buleya described the programme as a foundational initiative aimed at equipping teenage girls with the skills, confidence and knowledge needed to carve out their own identities and effect positive social change within their communities.
The Miss Teen Malawi programme complements the ethos behind Little Mister, Miss Africa-Malawi launched in 2022 as a pageant of Miss Culture Malawi and stemmed from the growing global trends meant to help children with their communication skills, talent development, confidence, poise and social development skills.
Organisers of the Little Mister, Miss Africa-Malawi said the pageant would allow winners to be involved in community charity campaigns advocating for fellow children’s rights and other workshops while promoting tourism.
“It also aims at promoting intercontinental tourism and creating a social networking platform for all kids on the African continent,” reads part of the statement.
Miss Teen Malawi contestants will be expected to obtain parents or guardian approval and once permitted will engage in online competitions before advancing to the final event, where 15 girls will compete for the title of Miss Teen Malawi.
Furthermore, participants making the top 15 will undergo preparatory activities including workshops led by influential leaders addressing pressing societal issues such as gender-based violence and early marriages.
The winning contestant will earn an opportunity to represent Malawi at Miss Teen international.
