Chakwera contributes K2.5 million to Unima Theatre Festival-Malawi Music Downloader

President Lazarus Chakwera has contributed K2.5 million towards preparations for the University of Malawi (Unima) Theatre Festival scheduled for this weekend.

Unima associate professor of drama Zindaba Chisiza said the President’s gesture shows real commitment and desire to see performing arts thrive in Malawi.

“The contribution speaks highly of the arts in general that they are valued as a contributor  to national development and cohesion. We are more than grateful,” he said.

Chisiza said the organising committee is short of funds and the President’s contribution will go a long way in addressing some of the financial constraints that they have.

“We are deeply grateful and it sends a strong message to galvanise support for not just this festival, but other arts events that take place in Malawi. We know the President has made the contribution in his personal capacity.

“It is heart-warming, especially because the President is an alumnus of this institution. For the students that are here, they will appreciate the contribution more,” he said.

Chisiza, therefore, called on Unima’s alumni to think of ways of supporting their former institution.

He said so far they are making headway in preparing for the event.

One of the actors ready to take part in the event, Charles Mphoka of Kwathu Drama Group told The Nation in an earlier interview that they look forward to the opportunity.

“Unima has a younger audience which we look forward to connecting with. The students that may for now not appreciate our artistry will learn more about us. We are not academic, but we know how to act,” he said.

The Unima Theatre Festival will bring together various theatre players such as Kwathu Drama Group, Upile Drama Group, Solomonic Peacock, Young Travellers Drama Group and Tauka Arts Theatre. Music will be offered by Zeze Kingston, Eli Njuchi and Driemo.
